CHOICES - A STORY OF SURVIVAL

Choices Kay Runyan

When sixteen-year old Kay Runyan stands before a minister and exchanges wedding vows with her teenage boyfriend, she believes her marriage will provide an escape from poverty, sexual abuse and an unhappy home life. She soon realizes her mistake.

Fearing the disapproval of her fundamentalist Southern Baptist parents, she hides the pain of her troubled marriage until she can no longer bear it. After coming to terms with the choices she has made, Kay finds the strength to create a life for herself that she never thought possible.

Choices is the story of a woman whose journey takes her from humble beginnings in East Texas in the 1940s, to traveling the world to shine light on the challenges faced by individuals with dyslexia and learning disabilities.

PRAISE FOR CHOICES

The author also does an excellent job of documenting mid-20th-century American poverty in a way that feels simultaneously unusual and completely relatable…Runyan’s prose is folksy but sharp, particularly when it’s filtered through her perspective as a young girl.

From early beginnings of poverty, sexual abuse by a close relative and becoming a voice for people with non-visible disabilities, M. Kay Runyan's memoir is a compelling read that you don't want to miss.

Through sheer perseverance and against the odds, Dr. Runyan gained a Ph.D from U.C. Berkeley, has published in academic journals and textbooks, and has presented globally to audiences throughout the United States and Europe.

Dr. Runyan had a practice for many years in San Francisco, California focusing on students and adults with learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Disorder. She completed ground breaking research on why these individuals were entitled to accommodations at the university level.

Semi-retired and living with her dog Sophie in Eugene, Oregon, Dr. Runyan enjoys consulting, writing, reading, hiking, golf and her grandchildren.
